Wheelchairs are an important purchase for anyone who struggles with mobility issues. Wheelchairs restore a degree of independence for those who cannot walk at all or cannot walk too far without getting tired. If you are looking to purchase a quality, affordable wheelchair we are sure we can help.

There are mainly two types of wheelchairs available to buy.  They both fold for easy storage and have swing-away and detachable footrests:

Transit/Push Wheelchairs

Transit wheelchairs cannot be propelled by the user, they can only be pushed by a carer or companion. Instead of large rear wheels, as generally seen on a self propelled wheelchair, all four wheels on transit wheelchairs are a smaller size type. The lighter the wheelchair is, the easier it is for a user to push and a lighter wheelchair is also easier for the ‘pusher’ to lift up stairs or put into a car boot etc.

Self Propelled Wheelchairs

A self propelled wheelchair is designed so that they can be propelled by the user themselves, or as and when required being pushed by a companion. These wheelchairs give the user a little more independence than the transit wheelchair. A self propelled wheelchair can be easily distinguished by the two large wheels at the back, and the two small wheels in front.

Also available are wheelchair power packs, which can be fitted to either type of wheelchair to help push the wheelchair along. The wheelchair power packs are easy to operate by finger control, and can travel up to 4 mph with a range of 10 miles.

Prescriptive Wheelchairs

These chairs are a little more complicated and tailored specifically to an individuals needs. They are suitable for people who may spend the majority of his or her day in the chair and have very limited movement.  The prescriptive element is used to define the type of wheelchair required for the individual, seating needs (eg pressure risk) and details about components eg leg lifters, side support, reclining back etc).
