We have three different types of mobility scooters available to purchase:

Car Transportable Scooters

Car Transportable mobility scooters have a top speed of 4 mph, and a car transportable scooter can be dismantled very easily so that they can easily be transported in a car boot, or stored at home in a cupboard or garage etc.

Pavement Mobility Scooters

Also with a top speed of 4mph, pavement mobility scooters are the ideal mobility scooters for everyday usage. If you need to pop to the shops, or go just go for a drive, pavement mobility scooters are legal to use on public pavements for total convenience.

6 & 8mph Mobility Scooters

These mobility scooters have a greater top speed and are road legal mobility scooters. They are very robust mobility scooters that are suitable for use on the roads as well as the pavements, offering complete freedom. 6 & 8mph mobility scooters are capable of covering longer distances than other mobility scooters giving greater comfort and stability.

New mobility scooters require very little maintenance other than we recommend an annual service. It is recommended that certain steps are undertaken to ensure long life.

Do I need to take our insurance?

Although insurance is not compulsory yet, the Department of Transport states: ‘Although it is not a legal requirement, an insurance policy is strongly advised.” We therefore recommend that you take out insurance on your mobility scooter to cover in the event of accidental damage (including fire, theft and malicious damage) and personal liability arising from its ownership or use. For more information on our insurance policies please call us on 01934 838363.

Mobility scooters are divided into three classifications under the Use of Invalid Carriages on the Highways Regulations 1988:

Classification 1

  • These are manual wheelchairs, i.e. self-propelled or attendant propelled, not electrically propelled. These do not require to be registered with DVLA.

Classification 2

  • Covers powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters which are intended for footway/pavement use with a maximum speed of 4mph and an unladen weight not exceeding 113.4kgs.  These are not required to be registered with DVLA.

Classification 3

  • Classification 3 cover mechanically propelled invalid carriages that are constructed or adapted to be capable of exceeding a speed of 4mph but incapable of exceeding a speed of 8mph on the level under its own power. Such scooters are for both road and pavement use. They must also be fitted with a device capable of limiting the maximum speed to 4mph for use when travelling on footways/pavements. The unladen weight must not exceed 150kgs. These do required to be registered with DVLA.

How do I apply to register my class 3 invalid carriage?

We can help with this when the scooter is purchased from us, we will complete the DVLA form and help you with the process.
